Texas is a staunch believer and advocate of the Tenth amendment; powers not delegated to the federal government are reserved to the states and the people. Current governor Greg Abbott sued the Obama administration 31 times believing that the federal government has overstepped it boundaries. Texans are strong, independent people believing that they should have control on what goes on in their state. So if this is true, then why do Texans not show up at the polls? Out of the 78 percent of registered voter only 59 percent of registered voters went out to vote in the 2016 presidential election. Because Republicans has been able to dominate Texas, Democrats do not invest in lot of resources. Democrats look at Texas demographics and turnout rates and come to the conclusion that it is not worth the investment (Elbein). When there is a one-party dominance voters feel as if their vote will not make a difference when the outcome is already predetermined (Ramsey). It also does not help when there is redistricting happening and “most districts are drawn to favor one party or another” (Ramsey). Republicans depend on those who do not vote and draw the districts around with low engagement in order to combat their voting power (Elbein). If there was more competition a lot more voters would come out to vote, they will think that their voice will make a difference and what is currently transpiring. Even when the Texas Democrats try making an investments, their efforts are not effective. Most of the money is spent on advertising, this includes mailers and media, “which studies have shown does not increase voter turnout” (Elbein). Democrats are depending that Latino will vote for them; however Republicans have also been trying to get the Latino vote; and as long as Republicans are able to get enough votes to keep democrats from winning they do not need win over most of Latinos’
