On this day in history January 31st, 1865 what is known as today the 13th Amendment was passed by congress. By being passed it was put into the United States Constitution, officially ended the institution of slavery. President Lincoln was successful for passing the law during the Civil War. Lincoln said “Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to the jurisdiction.” The law finally went into effect after the civil war, before the southern states had restored the Union. Which is probably the best because everyone needs to know how to do things on their own and not force and beat innocent people to do it for them and all on top of that there was racism. The owners of the slaves would call their slaves names and make them feel like they were useless even though they did everything for them. There is always going to be racism no matter what the year and what the law is. However when congress passed the 13th Amendment they made a huge step and they made it to where everyone had freedom. The 13th Amendment is probably one of the biggest steps in history because if that hadn’t been passed then we still might have slavery and we defiantly would NOT be the world we are today. We wouldn’t have a black president or as of that there wouldn’t be any black leaders because according to the past black people are less than the white people.
