Nicolas Doerr Nolan Weiss The Cold War When I was younger I had disagreements and arguments with kids in school similar to the Soviet Union and the United States during the Cold War. We would threaten each other with words and accusations, but no one ever physically fought. This is similar to the Cold War except for in the Cold War, the arguments were much more important because they were the two biggest nuclear countries. The next paragraph explains what the Cold war was, how it started and how it finally ended. The Cold War had a negative effect on the Soviet Union and other countries. They decided to break up Germany into four zones, occupied by the United States, France, Great Britain and the Soviet Union. They did this because they thought it would be better to give the Soviet Union a piece of Germany instead of giving them other land that would give them a connection to the Mediterranean sea. A few years later, France, Britain and the U.S. merged their zones to make one large territory called West Germany. East Germany was still occupied by the Soviets and remained a communist nation. West Germany was a democratic country. At the time, the USSR and the U.S. were the only two countries in the world that had nuclear weapons. When the USSR successfully tested its first atomic bomb on August 29, 1949, the U.S. called it Joe 1. The U.S. felt this was a threat. Another event that continued the Cold war was when North Korea invaded South Korea which started the Korean War on June 25, 1950. The U.S. interfered in the war to try and stop communism from spreading. During this time, Julius and Ethel Rosenberg two Russian spies were accused of telling U.S. secrets to Russia. They were executed by the U.S. for giving the Soviet Union secrets about the United States atomic bomb. After Joseph Stalin, the Soviet Union dictator, died on March 5, 1953, there was a fight to see who would be the next leader
