The Iraq War began in March 20, 2003 and ended in December 18, 2011 but these are more than just dates. These are the markers of countless deaths that tally marked the so-called war on terror. Even though this “war on terror” was inspired by 9/11—an event which redefined the USA’s definition of freedom—America never hesitated to create exact replicas of said triggering event over and over and over again. Our country became a country of terrorists who claim to protect their own civil liberties and freedoms at the cost of bloodshed. Sure, there were terrorists who killed American civilians in 9/11 but that’s absolutely nothing to what we’ve done to them in return. But those good intentions mean nothing now. Now, we’ve got the middle east, riddled with war and its aftermath. We’ve got countless video documentaries from children facing the crossfires of endless terror, thousands of refugees which we reject asylum to due to paranoia, and millions of meaningless deaths. Those who fought in this war fought for nothing. Countless soldiers died on both sides of this war and their deaths were for naught. Many war veterans now find themselves homeless, limb-less, traumatized and what for? For our civil liberties and freedoms or to appease a country’s paranoia? Either way, they all failed. Our lovely, free star-spangled country is as paranoid and ignorant as it ever will be and there’s nothing no one can do to stop it because no one cares to stop it. This is not to say that our American veterans are bad people or that they got what they deserved. No, this is to say that they too are the victims of an intervention that sparked furthermore bloodshed than we as a country ever faced. This is to say that they will be forever viewed as victims rather than heroes. They will get their medals and whatnot but they will never be seen as heroes of war. That will forever be the label they will never attain regardless of how much they’ve
