Why Universal Health Care Should be Implemented in the United States Countless Americans struggle to pay for health care services every year. As of 2022, 25% of Americans could not afford to see a doctor (Lebow). It is obvious that the current health care system needs reformation. The U.S. has a private healthcare system, meaning every person pays for their own insurance. Although approximately 330 million Americans are insured, “...100 Million Americans paid insurance premiums for their families and themselves and still could not afford to seek medical help when needed. They paid for aid they never received” (U.S Health Care…) (University Wire). Even though a large portion of Americans have insurance, many are still unable to pay for basic health care services when needed. It is bad enough that the current system is overpriced, but it is also unproductive, “[Universal health care] would have produced savings of $459 billion in 2020.” (Texidor). The American healthcare system is actively wasting billions of dollars every year. This money could be reallocated and invested in various other things that would better …show more content…
This argument seems valid at first because universal health care would cause tax hikes. However, the increase in taxes would not wreck the economy, instead:
“... annual household costs will go down with universal health care, with a gain in treatment as opposed to a loss. In addition, the country as a whole will improve with universal health care because healthy workers produce more. In 2018, the US Economy lost more than $500 billion because sick workers could not perform. Of those, 73% reported not being able to get treatment for their illnesses.” (University Wire)
Not only would the average household cost go down, but the economy would surge. The tax hikes that would go into effect would simply replace the costs of private health care that most Americans are already paying
