HBO’s television series Westworld, is a show that contains multiple philosophical concepts, along with exciting narratives about cowboys and danger. The main concepts that appear within the series, revolve around Plato’s Allegory of the Cave, determinism, and philosophical zombies. By using its plot and its characters, I believe Westworld is able to display these theories and truly make its viewers question what the truth really is.
To first understand the arguments within my paper, an explanation of what the important definitions and ideas that will appear within it needs to be made. Firstly, to grasp the notion of philosophical zombies, one needs to be aware of what p-zombies are. Secondly, to comprehend determinism, one needs to understand what it is. Thirdly, one needs to know what Plato’s Allegory of the Cave is and what it means. Then finally, to be able to follow the comparison of all the philosophical concepts, one needs to understand what Westworld is all about. To start things off, the Allegory of the Cave is about three prisoners who have been forced to spend their wholes lives in a cave. In the cave, the prisoners did nothing but stare at the wall in front of them, as chains restricted their movements.

This is shown through the experiences and actions of Westworld’s character Maeve Millay. Maeve is a host that acts as the madam of the local saloon in Westworld. There she lives her life in a loop, believing she is human just like the guests that enter the park. One day, however, Maeve wakes up during her repair surgery, in the underground laboratory where lab techs mend the hosts after they have been killed.
