The Story of Us What is an American? By definition, an American is a native or citizen of the United States. To be an American, you must be more than just a citizen. You have to believe in the different opportunities America offers: diversification, liberty, and peace. America is a land of opportunity, a society with a higher standard of living, and a diverse country with the citizens descending not only the colonists, but the majorities and minorities as well. Most of all, being an American means to appreciate the country we live in and to never take for granted the privilege of calling ourselves American. Justice is the quality of being fair and reasonable. Is it fair that we want to restrict who comes onto our soil? “Who said free? Surely not me? The millions who have nothing for our pay – except the dream that’s almost dead today?” (Hughes 24). Not all Americans are equally free and it is unjust. We fight in wars to restore our sense of national pride and for equality, yet we are scared to allow people to reside in our country. Is it equal amongst gender? Amongst race? Sure we have advanced to make the minorities as equal as possible, but what about the wage gap women that make women largely unpaid compared to men? Justice is just juxtaposition to us. Justice for all just is not specific enough. Although crime and racism rage throughout the country, people are not being executed for their beliefs. For example, Hitler reigned with terror and he executed the people because they were different.
