Whether college should be free or not is a debate that has been going on for decades. In this article, however, we will figure out if college really should be free. College should be free, as there would be less student debt, more people would have access to a higher education, and it could lead society to new levels of innovation. First off, let’s discuss student debt. Student debt has been a rising problem, especially for those attending college in the United States. According to College Raptor Staff, “If an American college student is able to graduate with less than $10,000 in student loan debt, they are considered lucky.” This implies that college students are usually drowning in debt from student loans, even before they graduate. The average amount of debt a college student goes into by the time they graduate is around $37,000. In summary, student loan debt has a major impact on why students are wanting college to be free.
