The only way a state college should be free to attend is through a scholarship. College is more of a privilege, therefore it should not be free nor easy to attend. College can tell the difference between slackers and hard workers. The common belief on the subject is that state colleges should not be free to attend.
However, it would be far more beneficial if the American government simply provided free tuition at community colleges than have students go through a program. In conclusion, there are several emotional and logical appeals to support free community college tuition. This proposal will give more opportunities for many people and allow them to have a better future. President Obama has provided Americans the opportunity to advance their careers and education.
However, it is still an issue for students to cough up that money. The idea of making community college free to any student in America has been a dream for low income students for a while. President Obama’s desire to make the tuition of community college to everyone in the nation would only make it difficult for students to get a free education, limit them to essential resources, and discourage students from applying to four year universities. Granting free community college tuition to incoming freshmen will draw “more students to already crowded community colleges”. Along with the overcrowded campuses, a very long waiting list will soon form making it just as competitive to get into a four year university.
Having free tuition for college means that more people who cannot afford it now, would end up going. This is a good thing in terms that more people are getting a good education and continuing their educational careers to hopefully obtain good job, but it also decrease the value of a college education. If more people are able to earn degrees, it devalues them. Finding jobs even with their qualifications would be difficult (Should college be free?). This idea would also apply to the students, mainly student-athletes, that work for multiple years to try to perfect their skill and obtain full or half scholarship.
College should be free in the United States for multiple reasons. These reasons include, but are not limited to, the following. College is too expensive for the majority of the population of the United States. If college was free, it would let people explore their horizon, and have an easier time finding a desirable career. College has been proven to be effective, and even shown to have been working in the united states for over 100 years.
State colleges should not be free, the prices are lower as it is than if you were to attend an out of state college. I completely agree that education should be free for those who aren't as financially stable, considering the fact that they do not have a choice to partake if they would like to attend college or not. Contradicting the positive in that , there would also be so much negative. For example, if it was free then the government would have to pay, leading them to withdraw the financial amount needed out of our tax money. In general, when the government brings in more in taxes than it spends, it reduces the disposable income and slows down the growth of the economy.
France, Brazil, Argentina, Sri Lanka, and Cuba along with dozens of other countries offer free four-year colleges to their citizens. So why do Americans pay an average of thirty seven thousand dollars just for college tuitions? The price we pay for education is excessive, and the average cost continues to increase every year. The four years of education from colleges and universities following high school should be free in the United States. Though there are some side effects to having free college, such as higher taxes, the positive impacts that they can provide greatly exceed the negative.
Although this plan is great for the economy, some might argue that there are certain repercussions that should be taken into consideration. For example, by making community college free, the program would cost $60 billion in the course of 10 years in a cost-sharing program with the states (Butler 1). Although this sounds like it’s a substantial amount of money, it is manageable. In regards to the benefits of the proposal, this is a small price to pay. In the long run it is better for the economy.
Free College Tuition: About 70 percent of students are in debt from taking out loans to try to pay for their college tuition. The average debt per college student is about $30,000. The first two years of college should be free. In the first two years of college, we are practically relearning everything that we have already learned in high school. It's completely ludicrous to make us pay for classes that we already know the material for.
