Should schools fund fine arts programs? This debate began many years ago. Although they vary, a majority of high schools in the United States have fine arts programs. Competitions are a part of some programs, some have a difficult time recruiting students to participate, and many programs fall between these two extremes. According to Statista, in 2014, there were 27.98 million musicians in the United States (Pladson). Participating in music brings many benefits to each individual. Fine arts may be seen as a waste of money to some, however, schools should continue to fund and support these programs to foster future musicians. Students gain knowledge while participating in extracurriculars which is a benefit to fine arts programs. Music teaches students in ways other core subjects cannot. Being a member of an ensemble- instrumental, vocal, or dramatic- can teach teamwork. For the produced sound to be adequate, specific instruments or voices need to match throughout the ensemble. If a specific instrument or voice were to be louder or softer than the others the ensemble would be unbalanced. A balanced sound is an important factor in producing a quality piece of music. Garner-Hayfield-Ventura High School’s fine arts program is a great example of bringing daily enjoyment to all its participants. The opportunities fine arts programs provide, help many high school students choose a career path. High schools should be willing to provide as many career path opportunities as they can. A specific opportunity Garner-Hayfield-Ventura High School provides to its fine arts students is a destination trip. These trips have the ability to showcase student talent across the country.
