Ever since the 26th amendment was passed, eighteen year olds were allowed to vote. This new voting age led to this new age group showing less representation than older groups. It was then thought of in the Montgomery County to try and change this, so they lowered the voting age to sixteen. This new way of thinking was brought up to try and bring up the amount of young voters they see less of in elections. I support this new change because it seems like a good idea to let younger people have the chance to voice their opinions.

However, some of the compromises, like the electoral college, were made because of factors in the past and are now not needed in today’s modern democracy. While the electoral college once worked as a compromise in the past, it is an archaic system that unfairly represents the votes of citizens all across the nation. A popular vote should instead be utilized to fairly choose the people of power in this country and would better represent voters’ opinions. In implementing the electoral college, most states’ votes either go to one candidate or the other, leading to candidates to only campaign in swing states (Bradford Plumer 13).

I am writing in response to the article, “Labor will look at dropping voting age to 16, says Bill Shorten” (The Sydney Morning Herald, 31/9/15). I firmly believe that the voting age in Australia should be reduced to 16 years of age. Today’s younger generation are taking on more and more responsibilities therefore making them more than eligible to have their say into who is going to run their country. In today’s society 16 year olds are capable of obtaining a job, earning their learners permit and paying taxes.
Nowadays our world is changing hourly – its political, social and economic global picture depends on the decisions (more or less important, but still important), which are taken every minute. Sometimes it seems that all significant events have taken place, moreover it was a long time ago. At the same time we forget that there are areas of life, our daily lives, which have been completely different recently. In modern Western societies the right to receive education and to vote for women is natural part of life, contrast to the Third world counties, where women still do not have opportunity to take part in decision-making and influence various spheres of life in their countries. Skeptics may wonder: “What is so special about the fact that women are allowed to vote?”
It is clear that American voters tend to avoid local elections and off-year elections. Run-off elections are also likely to register lower voter turnout as compared to first-round elections. The larger the gap between first round elections and run-off elections, the higher the decline in voter turnout. Moreover, there are lower percentages of young people voting as compared to the older population. This is an important point to note since it highlights that young people do not have information guiding them on the importance of voting.
I feel the voting age limit should stay the same , i feel its best for our country. A lot of young people dont show interest in the presidental election like the older citizens do. Young people dont have enough knowledge to be able to vote , wich will make a big change for our country. Also, the low participation of young voters shows lack of civic responsibility.
Over the years, the legal drinking age in the United States has been heavily debated. Some argue that the legal age to drink should be 18 or 19 because people at that age are recognized as adults; others argue that the drinking age should be 21 because people who are able to drink should be more mature and have their lives better planned out. Although people are legally adults at 18, they are not yet mature adults; in fact, according to NRP, “emerging science about brain development suggests that most people don’t reach full maturity until the age 25” (“Brain”). In recent years, it has become more and more apparent that the adolescents of today are unfit for the responsibilities currently available to them. Equipping someone who is unable to fathom the risks of the decisions they make with the power to put themselves and others in danger is far too precarious. For this reason, the age at which adolescents become adults currently established is dangerously low. The age of legal adulthood should be 25, because at this age young adults are truly capable of comprehending the consequences of their actions and are able to handle the responsibilities of adulthood.
A person becomes legally emancipated at the age of 18. Emancipation is when one is considered an adult in the eyes of the law. Some “perks” of being an adult include: the right to get married, buy a house, or be charged as an adult in a court of law. Proponents of lowering the drinking age may say if one can buy a house, why can he not buy a alcoholic beverage?
Yet, to avoid this, we can teach them how not to be swayed at school. According to the Electoral Reform Society, they support young citizens at the age of 16 in how to vote and what decision making they should do. If teenagers get the support from authorized adults who can lead young adults to the right path through society, I believe we can trust their opinions. The Fulcrum exclaims that the Ontario Government already recognizes that 16 year olds can understand the issues and independent judges on them. From this, we can say that adults keep full eye on young adults and what kind of thinking they have towards politics so it is safe for teenagers to start voting.
Stepping into a voting booth for a teenager at age 16 or 17 can go either way really. In the article, “Takoma Park 16-year-old savors his history-making moment in the polls” author Annys Shin explains how Ben Miller a 16-year-old who works a part time job and attends high school was part of 350 other 16 and 17-year-olds who were granted the right to vote in municipal elections. Obviously much of the criticism that Takoma City Council received was from the older voters, as they argue that young people barely old enough to drive a car don’t have the experience as well as the perspective to vote. Nevertheless, I believe that even if teenagers at this age are not the most experienced, the City Council should still allow 16 and 17-year olds to vote.
