Not only does hate speech affect people by what they say with words from their mouths, but also words that they place out onto the internet. When someone posts hateful comments, pictures, or videos on the internet, they are usually brought down or deleted, but not completely. Just the way cyberbullying is considered a big deal so should hate speech. “a 12-year old Florida girl who had been taunted for more than a year online with posts calling her ugly and telling her that she should drink bleach and die before she took her own life.” (Feldman). “Harvard’s limitations on free speech, which a member of the Libertarian Forum summarized as disallowing students from saying “discriminatory things,” but which actually consist very specifically of a ban against hate speech.” (McConnell). Although hate speech is considered a form of free speech, Harvard decided that they make the rules for their campus. McConnell claims that he agrees with Harvard’s decision and that if a someone feels that they are being threatened then it should be taken into consideration and have actions taken up against it. Everyone who attends a university should feel as if they are safe and welcomed there especially with the tuitions that they have to pay. “‘While cases of hurtful speech are not crimes, if the individual(s) identified are students, MU’s Office of Student Conduct can take disciplinary action.’” (Graham). The University of Missouri created codes that suggest if a student is using hateful words towards another person, they can get in trouble for breaking the rules that they have set up for the students.
