Before students know it, they are a senior in high school and have no idea what they want to do with their lives. Parents and teachers are throwing information at them about colleges. The pressure is on them to decide what college they will attend and what they will study while being there. High school students are pressured all their childhoods to go to college and get that degree, yet, many people thoroughly consider what might be best for the student. Trade school is another option to further one’s education, another option to succeed, besides college, is expensive, lengthy, and does not guarantee anyone a job after graduation.

64% of bachelor's degree students take longer than 4 years to graduate (Hamm 2). If a student takes more than 4 years to graduate then they will be spending at least $20,000-30,000 more dollars for the degree. The advantage of a 4-year degree is that a student could earn more and could continue their studies such as a master's or doctorate (Hamm 4). Getting a master's degree or doctorate could enable someone to make more money in the future. Trade school is a more streamlined approach to education (Hamm 2). Colleen Hroncich is a policy analyst with Cato’s Center for Educational Freedom. Vo-tech schools have a lower dropout rate than conventional high schools (Hroncich 2). This would lead more vo tech students into the trades with less of a chance of them dropping out. Trade school gives students more ownership over their education (Hroncich 2). This allows students to control what they are learning and make their own decisions on which classes to take. College is not suited to everyone's learning styles which causes many to drop out (Hamm 4). Students will go to college just to party and hang out with their friends. Unemployment rates for college graduates have doubled since 2007 (Hamm 2). Many students spend so much money on getting a degree that they can not find a job related to it. Which also makes it hard for graduates to pay back student loans. Trade school students start working up to 3 years before college students (Hamm 4). Samantha Taunton is a 2019 graduate of the Pittsburgh Institute of Aeronautics. Taunton says “ I finished my four-year degree with honors, but unfortunately I had no next step forward into the field I wanted to enter” (Taunton 2). Trades are jobs that will not get exported to other countries (Hamm 4). The United States will always need plumbers, electricians, steamfitters, and many other trade practices. The US will continue to grow and will continue to need people to build buildings. There is a growing domestic demand for high-precision skills throughout the trades (Hamm 4). People think that they are supposed to go to college and when they graduate there will be a job waiting for them (Marcus 3). When getting out of the trades there will almost always be a job lined up for the student. Trade school may be more aligned with their passion, more affordable, and provides a good paying job faster (Taunton 3).
