It may seem absurd at first, but the idea of a “Buy Nothing Day” may be what society truly needs. The main focus of this day is to reduce the damage we put on the environment from pollution, overconsumption, and making wrong choices. The “Buy Nothing Day” should be in full effect and should be incorporated into every month for the sake of the environment, the people, and the world. Initially, many individuals may just ignore this movement, due to the fact that nothing can be purchased on this specific day; but if they were to give a chance to this movement, they could see that the benefits outweigh the negatives. Think about all of the electricity that will be saved and not wasted when the “Buy Nothing Day” is in full effect. Different types of resources could be saved for another day. Many consumers are dependent on transportation like cars, trains, and airplanes. All of which pollute as they are being used, whether it be coal or fossil fuels. The “Buy Nothing Day” not only saves our non-renewable resources, but also gives us the time to ponder about new resources that could be developed. The lack of pollution would also help out our endangered animals like the Polar Bears who are suffering as we speak as their ice is constantly melting. Many countries would kill to have the resources we have, and with this movement we can save incredible amounts of energy and resources that could be distributed to different countries in need. Not only would this help them but it would ease tensions between many countries. Individuals may also begin to question themselves on whether they really need a certain product or service. With this day they will discover whether they can survive without the items they purchase daily. A similar movement is “Earth Day” which mainly focuses on the environment and has had much success, so there is no reason why the “Buy Nothing Day” doesn’t have similar results. We people have done a lot of damage and harm to this world, but now it is time to make
