Lois' body was found with the .22 caliber gun in her left hand, but the bullet entered through the right temple. This is highly unlikely that she shot herself. The two bullets fired and the gunpowder on her left hand indicate that the killer fired the first shot to murder Lois, then they put the gun in the victim's hand, fired a second shot to create the gunpowder left over on the victim hand. After the second shot the killer retrieved the second bullet to try to hide the evidence.
After getting out of the shower, Lois went and sat on her bed. But to her surprise Maria entered the room after forcing her entry into the house. Maria was supposed to take Lois to the airport the next morning, but showed up with a gun in order to murder her friend. The two struggled which is why Maria's blood and hair was at the crime scene and Lois shot in the right side of her head. Maria made the scene look like a suicide, and wrote a fake suicide note. She put the gun in Lois' left hand were then she shot the gun to make it look like Lois had shot herself in the head. Maria collected the second bullet and took it with her. After words Maria talked to Michael to have an attempted break in to cover up Maria’s tracks and have reason for the forced entry. The next morning Maria had come to pick up her friend as if nothing had happened and discovers the body in the process.
