The total student loan debt is 1.3 trillion dollars and with 44 million borrowers that leaves an average of $30,000+ per person. College has been optional in the past but with the times changing, having a degree is becoming more important. In 1995, the percentage was 24.7% of Americans aged 25 to 29 have a least a bachelor's degree. In 2012, the percentage was increased to 33.5% which means that the rates are rising quickly. College costs too much money, it must be changed to become cheaper by lower their fees to get rid of the high debt after college, fix on how we can afford it and thus help out the economy. The main problem to the reason why college should be cheaper is the money aspect. As stated above, the student loan debt is 1.3 trillion dollars and the need for one is rising “Within the next decade, we’re projected to need an educated workforce where 60 percent of Americans have a college degree, and today we’re just over 40 percent that have one” (3 Reasons to Support College, Cappabianca). Their tax rates are 7% to 10% higher but most college students would say it is worth it. Other ways of paying the college tuitions is to crack down on wasteful government spending, increase tax rates on wealthy, and fix tax loopholes. Many people in Europe love of the idea of free college, “As of the 2013-2014 school year, the countries with tuition-free public higher education (at the bachelor's and master's degree levels) included Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Norway, the Slovak Republic, Slovenia, Sweden, Turkey, and Germany.
