Women’s Rights in Sports Imagine if you were going to the gym to try out for volleyball and they said you weren’t allowed to play sports because you were a girl. Back in the 1970’s if you were a female, you didn’t get the opportunities that men got, therefore you were not allowed to play sports.Women were considered weaker than men so while the men worked in the fields, women stayed home to cook, clean, and take care of children (“WIC-Women’s History in America). Throughout the years women have fought hard for what they believe in and the rights we have today, allowing women to play sports. To begin with, less than 5 decades ago women were treated very unfairly and had very few rights compared to the rights men had (“Women’s Rights”). Women were not able to play sports because of the stereotype that men were better. Not only were women not allowed to play sports, but were also not allowed to vote, work, get equal pay, own property, be educated, serve in the military, or have parental rights (“Women’s Rights”). The ideal woman was a loving wife who was obedient to all men (“Women’s Rights Before the Civil War”). As the years went by, women started to earn rights little by little. …show more content…

This law, Title IX, required that schools provided both boys and girls the same opportunities to play sports (“The Next Generation of Title IX: Athletics”). Womens rights groups played a big role in fighting and earning the rights that women have today.
