The topic of abortion has always been very relevant in society and has affected it many ways because of the major impacts that it has had on some lives. According to the National Abortion Federation, a federation with experts on abortion, when states in America began creating laws against abortion in the 1800’s, women used to go to extreme measures to get illegal abortions (National Abortion Federation). Currently, abortion is only legal in some states which causes a lot of problems. These legal restrictions have caused much debate about whether the government should support women’s rights to abortions or not. There are two sides of the debate; pro-life and pro-choice. The arguments that are being presented mainly talk about how abortion is the murder of a child and that anyone who believes that abortion should be legal and supported by the government doesn’t believe that an unborn child has any worth. The way that this side of the argument thinks is that people who believe in pro-choice are ignoring the idea of the basic human right to live and do not care about the life of any human being (Dobson). While that may be the main argument from the people on that side, there is scientific evidence that shows that if the fetus is aborted within 10 weeks, then it isn’t developed enough to be harmed, according to the American Pregnancy Association, a health organization providing research on pregnancy (American Pregnancy Association). Regarding these facts, it is claimed by Maria Gallagher, a researcher, and author who is a part of the pro-life group, that pro-choice people choose to ignore that a certain stage in a fetus’ development does not equal life; but, the scientific evidence does show that if the fetus is aborted before that stage, it isn’t affected (Gallagher).
