If people love animals so much why would they mistreat them? “Tens of thousands back laws in narrow areas: animal rescuers may support anti-tethering laws to ‘stop irresponsible owners', misguided home breeders back anything labeled as fighting ‘puppy mills,' and animal shelters support close regulation of pet breeders and rescuers.” (Defending the Freedom to Own Pets). In 1966 the Animal Welfare Act was put into place to help animals that are in need. Animal rights are important because they protect animals against animal abuse, animal containment, and animal smuggling.

Smuggling animals is a big problem all over the world, people often smuggle animals that are rare or animals that aren't found in their country. Smugglers are people that capture and sell rare animals or animals in other countries exchange for big cash (Mason,17). No animals are safe from smugglers, especially animals that are on the verge of extinction. “Animals that are rare, even those that are facing extinction, often become popular with collectors” (Mason, 17). When people smuggle animals, the animals are often kept in very poor conditions that usually end in the death of the animal by either suffocation or starvation (Mason, 17). When smugglers are in the process of taking the animal they are often in such awful conditions that most die on the way to their destination.
