Arguments Against Animal Testing

This topic of testing and experimentation on animals is one that I feel strongly about. I am a large supporter animal rights - not just by viewing the practise of experimentation and testing on animals as unethical. Animals have no voice, and do not have the advanced ways of protecting themselves against dangers that we as humans have. I place great value on animal lives, so to me, abusing an animal is almost like abusing a person who cannot fight back or stand up for themselves (such as the elderly, people with disabilities, or children). I have a hard time feeling any sort of sympathy for someone who gets punished for treating animals in any way less than a person should be treated. Many people who believe in testing on animals argue that since animals do not have the same moral standing as people, it is alright to use them in experimentation. They say that since animals do not have the ability to process complex information, and that they don’t understand things as well as humans, it makes it alright to test and experiment on animals. However, there is a flaw in this argument. There are many people in our world who do not even meet these complex requirements and standards that are needed to be a part of the moral community. These can be people who have disabilities or a mental impairment. By this way if thinking, does it then make it alright to use these people in experiments? Are people who support this line of thinking saying that disabled and mentally challenged people deserve no more rights than what is given to animals? It seems that they are saying that indirectly. However, if experimentation and testing was actually done on this group of people, there would be a much larger outcry about it than what is now being done for
