Lots of people worldwide believe that racism in football is a huge problem. There are many examples of both players being racist to each other, and fans being racist towards the players. There have been various cases where a football player has had to walk off the pitch midgame because they couldn’t tolerate racial comments coming from the fans. Whilst I’m sure some people disagree with this, I personally do see it as a growing problem, and that it’s something that should be addressed. When CSKA Moscow played Man City during a champions league game held in Moscow in 2013, they shouted racial abuse at Man City’s Yaya Touré. French Man United striker Eric Cantona launched at a Crystal Palace supporter in a kung-fu style attack, aiming the studs on his boot towards the supporter’s chest. He also threw several punches towards the fan. In reports afterwards Cantona had said that the fan made racial remarks towards him during the game. Cantona was given a 9-month ban from playing football. This is an anti- racism campaign which attempts to show people in Europe why racism in football is unacceptable and how we can try and put a stop to it. Many supporters of this campaign include Rio Ferdinand, Sol Campbell, Steven Gerrard, Kolo Touré and Cristiano Ronaldo, who have been, and still, are very big names in football. So far, the campaign has been very successful in their mission and have started selling T-Shirts and other apparel with pictures of the ‘Show Racism the Red Card’ slogan on them. Thousands of the clothing items have been sold through the United Kingdom and Europe. Though the campaign has been very successful, I believe racism in football will never be completely
