Racism can be defined as the belief that some races are inferior to others. The concept started when the colonial era resulted in the creation of nations. The different nations sought to define themselves and their role in the new global order. The western societies believed that it was responsible for enlightening other countries. The belief resulted in a feeling of superiority as they sought to lead the new countries. The approach created a power dynamic where the western societies were able to lead and exploit other groups in order to achieve their social, political and economic aims. In particular, the prison system has been used to entrench discrimination against African Americans. The prison population is overrepresented by African Americans who are targeted by police officers. The high rates of African American prisoners in the country demonstrate the lack of equality within the American criminal justice system. Imprisoning people denies them the opportunity to achieve social and economic mobility due to their criminal record. Prisons are an inevitable feature of the modern society (Davis 9). However, they have been used to undermine the ability of one community to achieve social and economic mobility by limiting the opportunities that they have. Moreover, it undermines African American families. A child whose parent is imprisoned is at a significant disadvantage as compared to his or her peers. As a result, it is important for the society to take decisive steps in tackling the institutionalized racism within the criminal justice system. Moreover, an evaluation of court rulings can reveal significant discrepancies between how white suspects are treated and the approach taken when African Americans are involved.
