Social promotion is known as the process of promoting students to the next grade level despite whether the child learned the material or meets the expected learning standards or not. The term “social promotion” is used because the practice is based on promoting students based off of social reasons rather than academic reasons, such as allowing the child to move up with his or her peers. There is a division when it comes to the ethics of social promotion. On one hand, a child should be taught the material until he/she understands it. On the other hand, there could be reasons why an educator or parent would not want a child held back, such as athletic eligibility or social stigmas.
