Arguments Against Standardized Testing

Can a singular test really determine the understanding, potential, and creativity of a student? Standardized tests are often seen as indicators of college and job success, but in fact, it only determines which students are good at taking tests and which aren't. The reason why I chose standardized testing as my issue for my project is because it is an issue that I can personally connect with and because I believe that standardized testing should be entirely scrapped and should be replaced with better methods of testing a student’s potential, creativity, and understanding. The reason behind its creation is because of the passing of the “No Child Left Behind Act”; which was created to “highlight the concern that the American Education system was missing compared to its other international competitors by raising standards, increasing accountability, and making sure all kids, regardless of background, had access to a high-level of education” (Legal Information Institute 2001). The issue with standardized testing is that it harms communities, increases anxiety and stress levels, perpetuates inequality, and is a bad predictor of future success by creating inequality, increasing stress levels, and by limiting new academic methods. Standardized tests can often help and worsen the differences in social and economic status. This is because students from wealthy families typically have better access to better resources for preparing for standardized tests, which results in them scoring higher on these tests and perpetuating the cycle of
