Philosophy is the study of knowledge. Throughout the decades of the study of philosophy, there have been many great philosophers. One philosopher in particular is Aristotle. Aristotle was born in 384 BC in Northern Greece. Many people have heard about Aristotle at least once in their lifetime, as he is known to be one of the greatest. However, most do not know about his views and beliefs. Aristotle has his own ethical theory. He believes that there are no moral standards that are set in life for us to follow. He believes that any ethical theory we have is based on the reality of nature, and everyday life. Essentially, Aristotle believes it is up to you, and your surroundings that will decide your fate/actions.

They consist of the nutritive, appetitive, and rational. However, Aristotle focuses more on nutritive, and appetitive. The nutritive part is always active, like our respiratory system, and the appetitive part is essentially the “hungry”, or “needy” part. Aristotle argued that you would not find much joy or happiness in material, or wealthy things. He argued that happiness would be complete with virtues. A person can display a happy personality when they have experienced virtues. A virtuous life is based on your moral choices. If we make the right choices in life, we will eventually become a virtuous person, who will eventually not need to make choices when a moral issue happens again in life. When a human has accomplished this, the human life is complete. Aristotle emphasized the idea that happiness, is the end of a life. However, moral virtues are not the end of a life. Moral virtues often represent someone who is going through a depression, unhappy time in their life, or someone who is at a standstill in life. Aristotle believed that the relationship you have with friends is the same relationship you have with yourself. When you have a friendship with someone, a person loves himself, just like one does with themselves. There are three kinds of friendship, utility, pleasure, and the good. Aristotle believed that the good would remain in a relationship, as long as both parties keep their personality, and identities during their time being friends. Aristotle emphasizes how important it is to love yourself, and to achieve your own happiness. He believes every man should achieve their own happiness, through whatever practice, or theoretical reasoning.
Aristotle’s ethical theory ends on the idea of intellectual contemplation. Intellectual contemplation is the exercise of perfect happiness. Reason is the highest form a human can achieve. Aristotle argued that one cannot have such a life if they do not have a proper social environment surrounding them.
