In human history there have been many different philosophers. A philosopher is someone who practices philosophy and is a thinker. One of the most known philosophers is Aristotle. Aristotle was known for being an important figure in Western Philosophy. He is also known for being the teacher of Alexander the Great. Before we go into his teachings, let me tell you about his background information. Aristotle was born in approximately 384 B.C. in Stagira, Greece. He was born to Nicomachus and Phaestis. Unfortunately, both of Aristotle’s died when he was child. Since he lost both of his parents, his guardian became Proxenus of Atarneus. Proxenus of Atarneus educated Aristotle until he was seventeen. In 335 B.C., after Alexander grew up and succeeded his father, Aristotle asked his permission to open a school. Aristotle named his school the Lyceum. Aristotle’s students were known as “Peripatetics,” (people who travel about.) They were called this because Aristotle was known to walk around school grounds as he taught and they were forced to follow him. Students of Aristotle’s school researched and learned various topics such as: science, math, art, politics, and philosophy. Unfortunately, the same year Aristotle opened his school, his first wife died. Not long after, Aristotle found love with a woman named Herpyllis. In order to not be prosecuted, Aristotle left Athens and fled to Chalcis. Although Aristotle wasn’t today’s definition of a scientist, he researched and studied it. He studied: marine life, animals, biology, meteorology, and humans. Aristotle’s purpose in philosophy was to come up with a universal process of reasoning that would allow man to learn every conceivable thing about reality. One of his main focuses was his systematic concept of knowledge. Aristotle also discussed how someone might retain information about objects better through deduction and inference. In Aristotle’s eyes, a deduction was a reasonable argument where things are “laid down” and another person follows with their perspective. Philosophers now call this syllogism. Aristotle’s philosophy also touched on ethics.
