In Carnes Lord’s book Aristotle the Politics he states, “Since our first inquiry concerning regimes we distinguished three correct regimes-kingship, aristocracy, polity- and three deviations from these-tyranny from kingship, Oligarchy from aristocracy, and democracy from polity” (Lord, 1984, pg 119-120). The best regime is a regime that has all the right things it needs to govern a city and to help it prosper. There are different types of regimes just like how there are different types of cities. The cities are different so they should not have the same regime. Aristotle talks about the five elements that help make up a city. The first element multitude refers to the farmers that grow the crops and raise the animals. The second element to a city is the vulgar element. This is where the needs and the wants come into play. Some citizens get things just because they want. The third element is the marketing element. This element is focused on the city’s market such as trading and selling goods and making money. The fourth element is the laboring element. A city cannot be built without there being any labor. In order to have the best regime the city must have items to make a profit from. Slaves are a part of a city as well. There must be workers in order to sell items to make money off of. Slaves are not people who are sold, in the definition that people are used to. Lord explains slaves as individuals who see reason to be successful or work but have not yet. It is common that slaves, or people with a slave mindset be dominated by other members of a community. There are additionally slaves as per the law, who could conceivably be regular slaves. Authority is taken over with those who are slaves, but on the political side control is also taken from free people. Lord explains this concept by stating, “It is impossible that a city is by nature slavish merits being called such: the city is self-sufficient, but what is slavish is not self -sufficient” (Lord, 1984, pg 123). The city can stand on its own if it has workers to sell things to make money.
