Across the United States, there are three different levels of law enforcement agencies that uphold the justice system. These agencies are known as a municipal agency, a state agency, and a federal agency. In Arizona, these three different levels of law enforcement are clearly seen within the Glendale Police Department, Arizona Department of Public Safety, and United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Even though each of the three law enforcement agencies have many similarities and differences amongst their roles, they all have the shared vision of working together to protect and defend the people in their jurisdiction.

These men and women who patrol the streets under the Arizona Department of Public Safety are known as the Arizona State Troopers (“History”, n.d.). Their main office is located within the central Phoenix area of Arizona. The main role of this law enforcement agency is to enforce state laws in the areas of traffic, gangs, theft, narcotics, racketeering, liquor and specific regulatory functions such as patrolling the Arizona freeways (“History”, …show more content…

First off, each of the law enforcement agencies have specific jurisdictions that they have control over. For instance, the Glendale Police Department can only have jurisdiction in the City of Glendale, the Arizona Department of Public Safety has jurisdiction over the entire state of Arizona, and the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement has jurisdiction over the entire United States. Even though the Arizona Department of Public Safety can go and make an arrest in the City of Glendale, the city of Glendale cannot make an arrest outside city limits. For example, say a Glendale police officer was dispatched to a domestic disturbance on 43rd Avenue and Bell, He would not be able to arrest anyone since he is outside his jurisdiction. In this case, an officer from the Phoenix Police Department would have to make the arrest. Another difference is the locations that the agencies can be stationed in. For the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement, they are stationed almost anywhere in the United States with their field offices and also stationed throughout the world through their Homeland Security Operations. The Arizona Department of Public Safety and Glendale Police Department cannot have international operations due to their limited jurisdiction.
