Around 1095 AD, thousands of European men approached the city of Jerusalem during the First Crusade as they prepared for battle. These men began their journey shortly after Pope Urban II called the men to arms around 1095 AD, and many of them decided to leave their family and homes to go conquer the city of Jerusalem for their Christian religion. In departure for the Crusades, many kings and knights began to develop armor and think of new ideas in hopes to make the conquering of Jerusalem more easy. Also, as the men fought for the Christian faith, people in Europe also helped in developing weapons and armor hoping that they could help their country in battle against Muslims. Metalworkers in Europe began to shape more beneficial protective gear and sell the armor to knights so that the knights could battle with the muslims with very heavy but strong protective coverings. Also, depending on the type of combat used, blacksmiths would create different chainmail and shields for each type of knight. Many infantry troops would carry large protective shields used to both hit enemies with and also deflect blows from swords and arrows. The two very popular shields of knights of the crusades were the heater and kite shield. Both of these shields were large protective shields with pointed bottoms that widened as the shield approached the head and shoulders of knights. Many aggressive fighters would buy the lightest heaters and kite shields in hopes to move more effectively in battle while proposing more of a threat to the enemies. However, men who fought in columns and more methodical ways of battle chose heavier shields that could withstand heavier blows from swords and maces. Each shield would also have straps that knights could put their arm through and some shields would have a notch in the top of the shield which would help in resting a spear on during a charge. For many men in the archery, small round shields made of wood would be used. These were used to block arrows from injuring the body during battle. This was called a wooden knight cross shield and offered sufficient protection for archers. In the medieval times, most knights would decorate their shield with either St. George’s Cross on the front or Richard the the Lionheart’s seal on the
