Evil “No wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light”. We all know the story. The story of how the angel Lucifer rebelled against God, and as a result, he fell from heaven and became the devil. Sentenced to forever be the symbol of evil and temptation, he is generally regarded as the reason people fall into sin. He is represented in many shapes and sizes, often in a disguise, while possessing unnatural knowledge and powers, all to lure people to do his bidding. And while there never seems to be agreement among anyone on what evil is and if it even exists, it is safe to say, it is one of the most important aspects of our lives. For his continuous attempts at charming Connie into leaving her house do not stand alone. Numerous times he seems to possess some kind of supernatural power. Either that or he is simply lying to Connie about what her family is up to at the barbecue. Nevertheless, it is obvious that he is not as innocent as he wants to seem. For what will happen when she ultimately joins him? We are not told be the author, but I’m inclined to believe rape is involved. For is that not the fate of every girl who falls to vanity and lets herself be convinced by “creepers”? It is also not the truth. I do not think Connie is any different than other teenage girls in the way she wants to feel confirmation and seems to live in a cloud of music and boys. I am impressed she is still able to realize her mother loves her when she time and time again compares Connie to her 24-year-old sister, June. And what leads me to believe Connie is the real outcast of her family is not because she is pretty but because she still cares about them. Arnold Friend reminds of this when Connie decides to go with him. At this point he has threatened Connie with hurting her family if she does not come with him, and when she does he says “you’re better than them because none of them would have done this for you”.
