Art Career Progression Essay

Over the last few years, I've come to realise that my real ambition is to pursue an art career which is wider in scope. A space where I'm not the artist, but where I can act as a catalyst for other people's work. That's why I'd like to focus on making connections between different practices and artists as a curator. I feel that my background limits my horizons, however, and I should take a step forward. The MLitt in Curatorial Practice could provide an incredible opportunity for my academic and professional development. For several years, I was a collaborator at Resonance FM, a London-based art radio, where I came into contact with many artists. I also volunteered at Ham House, where I learned about public spaces and audiences. I remained creative in music, circuit bending and photography. I currently participate in drawing workshops and exhibitions at The Stove Network. I developed a further understanding of art through exhibitions, books and the media. For example, books such as After the End of Art, The Story of Modern Art, and more recently, How To Write About Contemporary Art and the writings of Hans Ulrich Obrist have stimulated and influenced me. Recently, I took online courses on Modern Art & Ideas by MoMA and The Modern & Postmodern by Wesleyan University. These have improved my understanding of the ideas underpinning contemporary practice and have given me an appetite for learning. I can also bring skills which are fundamental for curatorial practice. For instance, like curators, sound engineers show the artist's work in the best possible light through a collaborative approach.
