The Renaissance The Renaissance is one of the biggest cultural movements in human history. It began in the 14th century and ended in the 17th (1350-1600). This cultural movement took place in Italy. This era was characterized by curiosity and discoveries. The Renaissance shaped and molded Europe’s society by making it more organized and creating customs. Also, it created a way in which people could talk about their lifestyles creatively. This way being art. Art was crucial during The Renaissance , since it allowed people to express their thoughts, lifestyles, and discoveries. Because of this, many art styles and textures were developed. This were oil painting, fresco painting, the use of concrete, and the creation of very realistic sculptures. Oil painting is a technique that was very commonly used during The Renaissance. It consisted on painting on a wet plaster wall, so that when it dried it stayed permanently on the wall. This was the method that Michelangelo used to paint the Sistine Chapel ceiling. Concrete was very important during The Renaissance because of it use in architecture. Concrete had been used since roman empire for this purpose. One famous architectural structure made out of this is the “Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore” in Florence, Italy. One of the most known art expression during The Renaissance was sculpture. Most of the time, they were made out of stone and often portrayed religious characters. One example of them is the famous “Statue of David” made by Michelangelo. Humanism was the intellectual movement in which renascentist wanted to follow the ways of the Greeks and Romans, mostly their intellectual ideas.
