He co-authored the research article "Greater Inadvertent Muscle Damage in Direct Anterior Approach when Compared to the Direct Superior Approach for Total Hip Arthroplasty," which is "in press" to be printed in the Bone & Joint Journal.

The DS technique causes minimal damage to the patient’s soft tissue; thus, improving patient recovery experiences and allowing patients to return to their daily activities faster than ever before.

The DA method causes considerably greater damage to the patient’s gluteus minimus muscle and tendon than is seen with the DS technique; in addition, the DA method damages the rectus femoris muscles and the tensor fascia latae, Dr. Roger’s DS technique does not.

Dr. Douglas Roger is the medical director at the Institute of Clinical Orthopedics and Neuroscience, as well as the program director for the Disease Specific Certification by the Joint Commission for hip and knee replacement surgery at Desert Regional Medical Center, which is located in Palm Springs, Calif.
