Arthur Miller There are many classical writers throughout history, many are famous. There are hundreds, even thousands of classical American writers, all writing for different purposes and reasons. Some writers are poets and write to appease the ear through rhymes. Some are fantasy writers their stories are full of imagination and creativity. Some writers write for a purpose, to show or explain to the reader their position and thoughts through symbolism, called an allegories. Hollywood was a different place back then. Hollywood made uplifting movies that centered around the family. The children oftentimes obeyed their parents. Education was commercialised, as a fad in movies and in television shows. In the movies families looked perfect, but not to Arthur Miller. Miller believed no family was perfect and every family had problems. In many of his writings there are problems with the family. In Arthur Miller's book death of a salesman (“Miller wrote the first act of Death of Salesman in less than a day. It was adored by nearly everyone. Death of Salesman won him the triple crown of theatrical artistry”) Willy’s family (in Death of a Salesman) procure many problems. To begin with, Willy talks to himself and embaresses both of his sons constanly. Willy even had an affair with another women, this was looked down upon especially in the fifties. At the end of the story Willy and his son Biff get into a heated argument that gets physical. Both Willy and Biff were yelling and even pushing each other. In the fifties this was unheard of, in most Hollywood movies, the kids respected their parents, and would not dare to yell at their parents. If a child showed the least sign of disrespect to their parents, they would get a whooping. Arthur Miller always wrote for a purpose. In every story Arthur Miller wrote their was a lesson to be learned. Arthur Miller used numerous allegories and parables to discuss hot topics of his day, and to show inside on political situations at the time. Miller also spoke on morals a lot “Miller's plays deal with strong issues of right and wrong. More importantly, they stress how people treat those issues in times of intense pressure. For example, "All My Sons" deals with a businessman selling faulty parts to the army in order to keep his family fed.,” Arthur Miller loved bring up controversial issues up in his plays. He loved making difficult situation for his characters. “Regardless of whether his protagonists hold onto their values or sacrifice them, Miller's style retains a deep-seated compassion for them.” We feel deeply for his everyman hero in "Death of a Salesman," and the hapless Puritans caught in the web of mass hysteria in "The Crucible." “The ultimate tragedy of their lives -- and the way they struggle and suffer against greater forces than they -- is intended to connect us to the struggles of our fellow man.
