2. Investigation 2.1. The characters’ past The three characters I have chosen for this essay, Arya Stark, Tyrion Lannister and Daenerys Targaryen, have pasts that are in many ways both very similar and very different. All three of them were born as children of lords and ladies of some of the most powerful houses in Westeros, with close connections to the Iron Throne. Arya’s father Eddard is the best friend of King Robert Baratheon, Tyrion Lannister is the uncle of the future king Joffrey Baratheon, Daenerys is the daughter of the previous king and her brother Viserys claims the right to the Iron Throne. Despite this they had very different upbringings. Arya was skinny and small, but talented in physical activities such as riding. She had …show more content…

Arya was stubborn and did not want to conform to the behaviour expected of a girl of her status, i.e. learning to sew, dance etc. She was confident in herself, but her stubbornness and unwillingness to conform to the behaviour deemed appropriate for a girl of her status makes her something of an outsider. Arya is the character that is least affected by her past and her upbringing of the three characters I’ve chosen and instead she tries to rebel against the way that everyone else wants her to be, much to the contrary of her sister Sansa, who was significantly more skilled in the “womanly arts” and does everything that she is told to. She can sometimes be careless and act on impulse. Daenerys is very different from Arya. She is not confident and other characters, especially Viserys, can easily make her obey. She is careful and suspicious of other characters, which is understandable considering her past experiences with other people and Viserys paranoia. As mentioned earlier, she is afraid of …show more content…

As he mentions in the earlier quote, his physical limitations makes him unable to train in any form of combat, so instead he focus on reading. He does not take things seriously, one of the only characteristics that he shares with his brother Jaime, although he can use a more serious tone when the situation requires it. He has a witty sense of humor that most other characters in the novel lack, clearly setting him apart. He is the only Lannister that shows any kind of respect for the Starks, Jon Snow in particular. He takes full advantage of his position as the son of Tywin Lannister, getting some form of respect as a result of his social status, despite his small size, and using the wealth of his house to drink and visit brothels. He shows sympathy for other characters who are in one way or another social outsiders, such as Jon Snow who he identifies himself with to some extent. “All dwarfs are bastards in their father´s eyes” , as he put
