Paige DeFord Asclepius was the god of healing, medicine, truth and prophecy. Asclepius was the son of Apollo and he was the god on many things including healing, medicine,truth and prophecy. So I think that since Apollo was god of many things so he gave Asclepius the things he was less known for. Asclepius’ mother died while she was still pregnant. His father who was the god of healing at the time saved Asclepius from death. So that could also be a reason to why he is the god of healing because without his father’s power he would have been dead. Asclepius was the son of Apollo and a mortal Coronis, making him a demi-god. But unfortunately his mother died in childbirth. His mother died because while she was pregnant with Asclepius she fell in love with another mortal man. Apollo was mad so he sent his sister to kill Coronis. So Artemis did just that she killed Coronis by burning her on a funeral pile leaving Asclepius motherless his entire life so his father gave him the gift of healing and the secrets of medicine using plants and herbs. He was also tutored by Cheiron who was a wise centaur who lived on Mount Pelion. Many myths are centered around Asclepius, one being that in order for him to live his dad performed the first ever c-section on him because Artemis had killed Coronis after Apollo told her to. It also shows that intelligence is also important because Asclepius helped create the practice of medicine. Some of his techniques are still used today. Many sanctuaries were created in memory of him. One being the Asclepieion which was built by people that the dead god still had the power to heal them.
