Community based archiving is the practice of keeping records and maintaining the history of the community by members that live within that society. Another important job that comes with collecting the history is making sure it is obtainable to later community members so that they can learn about the history of each community. It is very important to preserve the voices of Asian American community members because of the history that the Asian American communities hold. Keeping these kinds of archives can allow the older generation to teach the new generations about what their past was like and how to ensure this type of racism can be abolished as we keep moving forward. This archive focuses on the beginning of the Asian American Movement in 1968. The text gives many examples of how people from the community came together to support Asian Americans and protest the American War in Vietnam, which reportedly killed two million civilians. As stated in the Asian American Movement “students and youth who are leading this transnational solidarity movement and demanding that US universities boycott and divest from Israel” (Asian American Movement 1968). Students and youth not only learn about, but also endure different forms of racism in the present day. These people were able to band together and support Asian Americans, they were able to preserve the voices of previous Asian Americans who can no longer stand up for themselves. Not only are they being the voices others couldn’t be, but they are also making their own history that can now be documented and taught to future generations.
