Born in Oahu, Hawaii, Ronald Takaki addressed stereotypes of Asian Americans in the perspective of an American academic, historian, ethnographer, and an author. Nonetheless, his awareness of identity as a descendant of Japanese immigrants is clearly portrayed throughout “Double Victory.” Takaki initially studied at Wooster University, and work there led to his questioning of ethnic identity. His personal experiences, such as his wife’s family’s refusal to accept him because he is a ‘Jap’, inspired him to dedicate his life for equality for Asian Americans. He was involved in developing UC Berkeley's multicultural requirement for graduation as a professor: the American Cultures Requirement.

In Kat Chow’s essay “My ‘Oriental’ Father”, she conveys her thoughts on the word “oriental.” Her father, who had come to the U.S. from Hong Kong, still uses the word “oriental.” The correct terms used by scholars and activists are Asian or Asian American. Chow would prefer her father use one of these scholarly terms instead. She is worried if he continues to use the word “oriental,” people will continue to view him as foreign.

This paragraph from Kesaya Noda’s autobiographical essay “Growing Up Asian in America” represents the conflict that the author feels between her Japanese ethnicity, and her American nationality. The tension she describes in the opening pages of her essay is between what she looks like and is judged to be (a Japanese woman who faces racial stereotypes) versus what she feels like and understands (life as a United States citizen). This passage signals her connection to Japan; and highlights her American upbringing. At this point in the essay, Noda is unable to envision her identity as unified and she describes her identity as split by race.
Derrick Bell’s The Space Traders is a science fiction short story that illustrates Wilderson ’s claim that, “stability is a state of emergency for Black people. Although it is a realistic depiction of how society has sacrificed Blacks in return for stability, it does not draw attention to how Asian Americans affect and contribute to this ideal. In my revision I include the attitudes various Asian American groups have towards Blacks and how they would react to Bell’s proposed scenario.
A History of Asian Americans, Strangers From a Different Shore, written by Ronald Takaki, displays an extensive history of Asian Americans as he combines a narrative story, personal recollection and spoken assertions. As long as we can remember, many races such as the Chinese, Filipinos, Koreans, Vietnamese and Japanese have dealt with some type of discrimination upon arriving to the United States. I have chosen to do this reading response of Lee’s piece about model minorities. This chapter focuses on stereotyping of Asian American students and the affects that that has. This piece starts off by discussing how there are two main stereotypes of Asian Americans and those are: being the foreigner and the model minority. Next, the piece discusses how Asian Americans are not seen as authentic, which has resulted in modifications to try and achieve the “American” standard of beauty. I believe that the central argument of this piece is showing that stereotyping Asian americans is detrimental to their education and their identity.

In his book “A different mirror: A history of multicultural America”, Takaki addresses the idea of multiculturalism in our society, and also talks about how for many years we have been told to acknowledge the notions that the core principles of our nation uprooted only from one group rather than a contribution from other various cultures as well. ASAM 100 has been one of the most insightful classes I have taken in college—so far! Through this class, I was able to learn a great deal about my culture and about myself as a person. In retrospect to my first “Why ASAM?” essay, I still believe that it is important for everybody to learn about their culture sometime throughout their life. I was able to learn about various topics such as: the issues of my culture, the traditions of my culture, how others view individuals of my culture, and more. Throughout this class, I learned about the Model Minority Myth and its effect on individuals of Asian background, I learned about issues that other Asian Americans faced through the video, Asian American Voices, and I learned to grow as a writer.

More importantly, Asians must start affiliating themselves as part of a larger community of color. Minorities should not be competing to get the most attention; oppression knows no boundaries. It is imperative to unify marginalized groups in order to consult solutions from different perspectives, rather than being ineffectively segregated. How the Asian narrative is told and often not taken into consideration is a core challenge, but nonetheless, Asian Americans are capable of overcoming with the same resilience they had to be throughout their forgotten
