France was the first country to have a sign language in 1760 and the U.S followed about 57 years later. Aristotle was the first person to take responsibility for sign language. Before Aristotle people have been talking in some sort of sign language for over 2,000 years. Sign language is a way to communicate to deaf people instead of the deaf having to read your lips. Asl is a lot like french in the way that words are placed in a sentence because asl was based on France’s sign language. Asl has officially been a language for 200 years. Asl was officially known as a language in 1817. That language is a lot different the asl now but it also has some similarities. When Gallaudet died in 1851 his youngest son Edward followed in his father’s footsteps by becoming a teacher at the American School for the deaf in Hartford, Connecticut. In 1864 Edward became the first superintendent at the Columbia Institute's college division. This school was the first all deaf school in America. In 1893 the school was renamed “Gallaudet University” in honor of Thomas and Edward Gallaudet. Deaf people have their own culture just a normal language. Like in deaf culture it is not rude to point at people or call someone fat. Deaf culture all started with having the first deaf school.
