The general aspiration of the word success, is defined by or achieved by, hard work and determination, overcoming failure, and helping others, especially when money isn’t available. According to the dictionary, success is the favorable or desired outcome, also, the attainment of wealth, favor or eminence. However, the dictionary definition of success does not express that success varies among each individual. The dictionary definition also focuses on wealth resulting in being successful, which does not hold to be true. Being successful can be displayed through many different views, but one thing is always similar with how each success story was achieved. This can be from lack of parenting, or growing up with no hard working role models. Although, children struggle everyday with achieving success, it has been proven it can be achieved through hard work and determination. Oprah Winfrey is a key example, in which one has overcome a troubled childhood and made great accomplishments. As a child, Oprah shuffled between living with family members. She spent her first couple of years living with her grandmother, but when she fell ill, the six year old Oprah was sent to live with her mother in a boarding house. This is where she would not only grow up around poverty, but also experience years of sexual and physical abuse. Oprah was raped for the first time at age 9 and continued to be raped for several years. Eventually she moved with her father and began to turn her life around. The stable education environment she lived in, allowed her to strive academically. This lead to Oprah becoming an honor roll student and was voted the most popular girl in her grade. By her senior year in high school Oprah had secured a full scholarship to Tennessee State University. She later became the first black female news anchor before the age of 20. After this Oprah turned a lowest-rated talk show in Chicago to the highest rated show, which was later renamed “The Oprah Winfrey Show”. Now Oprah is 61 years old and has a lifestyle she dreamed about during her traumatic, terrifying, childhood. This example proves that hard work and determination leads to success. Without Oprah’s drive and self-motivation to excel in school, she would not have succeeded. Not only did Oprah prove that working hard can result in getting a great education, it can result in preparing oneself for their career.
