The Assassination of John Lennon

John Lennon, former Beatles member, was well known for his career in music. In 1980, he was shot by a man named Mark David Chapman outside of his apartment in New York City. Mark Chapman shot him four times in his back. Later, he returned the crime scene and pulled out the book The Catcher in the Rye, which was his way to make a statement.(Alexander) Many remember Lennon as an icon for peace and pacifism, but what you do not know is that he was opposite. Despite all of the rumors of Chapman being mentally ill, maybe he did have legitimate reasons to murder John Lennon. In an interview, John Lennon said, “Jesus was all right, but his disciples were thick and ordinary .” and “I needn’t argue about that...We’re more popular than Jesus.” (Cleave) This caused an uproar and a panic among among his fans . Enraged people would protest by publicly burning his albums. In August of 1966, people in Birmingham, Alabama and other exasperated religious cities turned in their Beatles albums to a radio station who used them for burning.
