The Sheriff Street community was and is impacted by the development of the docklands. As depicted in the image to the left, the community has experience a lot of change since the 1960’s. When gentrification commenced at Dublin’s docklands, many communities were affected, with residents feeling they were pawns in a game of urbanisation (RTE Archives, 1976). In 1976, RTE composed a report on the Sheriff Street community (RTE Archives, 1976). This report discussed the economic decline and social deprivation in the community (RTE Archives, 1976). A number of factors which impacted the community were highlighted, such as advances in technology for machinery, containerisation and transport methods (RTE Archives, 1976). These factors led to the displacement of workers in the local community, as the majority were dependent on labour intensive employment (RTE Archives, 1976). It is considered that work which was originally carried out by 40 men, now only requires 4 men (RTE Archives, 1976). This report highlighted that unemployment still remained as a major issue for the residents of Sheriff Street, and continues to be an issue for the community today (RTE Archives, 1986b) (Doucet and Duignan, 2012). In the 1980’s, Sheriff Street residents living in social housing accounted for 83% of the city’s unemployed (Kelly and MacLaran, 2015). There was a belief among residents that employers did not trust them due to the reports of crime in their community (RTE Archives, 1986b).
