Desiree Sanchez Mrs. Everett English 1302 April 17, 2017 Luce Rhetorical Analysis American journalist and politician Clare Boothe Luce gave a speech at the Women’s National Press Club in 1960, criticizing the tendency of the American press to sacrifice journalistic integrity. Before giving her speech, she prepares the audience for her message with her introduction segment. Luce uses her introduction to prepare the audience for her message by repeating the fact that she was invited to give the speech, stating that she is in a difficult situation, and asking them to be open minded of her opinions. In the first paragraph, Luce opens with a paradox about her feelings from happy to feeling challenged.
Phelps in this article examines why the United States has scored low on international tests consecutively for many years, and, though there are doubtless numerous factors that come into play, he determines that the most constituent for the results has to do with metrication, or lack thereof, in America. He also details his investigations of the possible repercussions of metrication, deciding that it would be beneficial for the country to convert to the metric system. His argument is ultimately well placed, thoroughly inspecting a multitude of angles in regards to the case. Genre Throughout the different texts we analyzed in the first half of the quarter, we looked at the various genres of the texts in order to see how they affect rhetoric. Genres are important to rhetoric because they raise and manage expectations the audience might have for a specific work. This is because people have internalized the generic conventions of a genre. We delved into these conventions by analyzing different genres of texts such as Pitbull’s music video, film, various poems, and speeches. An example of how we analyzed a genre is how we annotated Horace’s poem about carpe diem.
The first two chapters of this book deal with the mindset that we as teachers must have in incorporating the framework and pedagogy into our classrooms. Politicians call for missile defense projects. Many defense projects have failed and cost not only the government but taxpayers over 50 billion dollars. Lee Fang, a writer for The Intercept, shows how ineffective these programs have been in the past. The persuasiveness of Lee's argument in his article “Politicians Use North Korea H-Bomb Fears to Pitch Wasteful Missile Defense Projects” is based on a logical approach using facts, (logos), an emotion approach trying to rally us up (pathos), and on his credibility and the creditability of his sources (ethos). Lee's appeal to our logical (logos) side is based on facts.
Public libraries and the greater good of society are more connected than one may think. For Hamill, New York’s libraries are intertwined with the idea of the United States as a land of opportunity made possible by hard work. Throughout his essay, Hamill relates a basic public library to the society. He presents information that affect the reader’s feelings and make the reader determined to act to save the libraries by explaining his personal past with public libraries, the significance of them and how they relate to the future. Hamill begins his essay with a personal backstory.
In the short story “A Rose for Emily” written by William Faulkner we see how he foreshadows that Emily is the murderer of Homer. Within the introduction we are told that William Faulkner was a Southern writer who loved to write comedy and tragedy. I would definitely consider “A Rose for Emily” one of his best tragedy that he has written as it contains suspense and foreshadowing. Foreshadowing is defined as a literary device in which a writer gives an advance hint of what is to come later in the story.
