In Orwell’s 1984 there is a political party that believes in English socialism called Big Brother. They are the rulers of a nation called Oceania and hold absolute power. The tactics they use are based on techniques used by other totalitarian rulers and dictatorships throughout history, mostly focusing on German Nazisam and Stalinistic Communism. However, since this book was written over fifty years ago and is based in a dystopian future, some of the predictions Orwell made about dictatorships abusing technology have come to fruition in the modern day. While he turned most of Europe into a battleground the lands he conquered were oppressed by his extreme laws. When Hitler first rose to power he had a veritable private army of nazis and nazi supporters. His first act of large scale execution is called the night of long knives, were he had most of his political rivals killed over the course of three days. Hitler killed “hundreds of Nazis whom he believed had the potential to become political enemies in the future” (Night of the Long Knives). Once he was elected the chancellor of Germany, he waited until the president of Germany died and declared himself president and chancellor which gave him complete control over the law. One of the first laws he passed was called Führerprinzip and made it so anything he said or ordered was above the law (Evans, Richard J). He used this power to sentence nearly all non-nazis in positions of power to death and would then install people of his choosing to the newly vacated positions. The Kim dynasty in North Korea is a prime example. The laws make everything that the leader says undisputable and gives them unlimited power over the law. All forms of information are highly restricted by the North Korean government.
