Tribal Sovereignty The article by Thomas Kaplan for the New York Times, titled “Iroquois Defeated by Passport Dispute”, is about the Iroquois national lacrosse team being denied entry into Britain for an international competition using their tribal passports. The reason for this, given in the article, is that Iroquois passports are not made with current technology that protect against fraud. Kaplan describes how the team officials are stuck in a last minute back-and-forth with the British government to acquire visas for the players. The author relates the incident to the ongoing issues in the United States regarding recognition of sovereignty of Native American nations.
Thomas King in On the Back of the Turtle tells a story of creational myths which reveals Native American and First Nation interrelationships anent European ancestral North Americans dichotomy amid modern society. Firstly, before analyzing these stories and their relation to the text (which is frequent), it is relevant to delineate what they are, creation myths, given their polysemy. Jarold Ramsey defines myths as "sacred traditional stories whose shaping function is to tell the people who know them who they are; how, through what origins and transformations, they have come to possess their particular world; and how they should live in that world, and with each other" (4). In other words, myths embody the cognizance of an individual or communities
Extra Credit: Iroquois Legends and Myths: A psychotic Onondaga chief named Todadaho was a cannibal who ate from bowls made out of the skulls of his victims. He could kill with only a Medusa like look. After this two heroes entered, they were Deganawidah and he then encountered a violent, cannibalistic Onondagan chief. According to the legend, Deganawidah watched through a hole in the roof and in which he saw Todadaho preparing to cook his latest victim.
First, the wolves are linked with light and “best love the sun” and when their humanness leaves they possess “bodies shimmering”, deductively making the humanness the attribute that kept them in the dark. Next, the defeat of the Nanurlualuk is detailed with “flashes of multi-hued flames” signifying the goodness correlated with the wolves defeating the evil. The other main evil in the story is the grandmother. The permanently human grandmother is described in a “dark patch” and she is illustrated as a “shadow” when she emerges. It is clear to see her wicked action and selfish personality, but interestingly the tribe is still only able to see the human grandmother as “young and beautiful”.
October, 1763 After years of fighting alongside the British, the battle over our homeland has finally ended. I still wonder, how did we end up fighting for something that has always been ours? We, the mighty Iroquois, have defeated the French settlers and their bloodthirsty allies, the Algonquins. With this came a royal decree.
During the French and Britain‘s conflicts, the Iroquois Confederacy consisted of six nations: the Mohawk, Seneca, Cayuga, Onondaga, Oneida, and Tuscarora. Although, I’m sure all of these nations have interesting backgrounds, I’ve decided to find out more about the Cayuga nation. The Cayuga nation has a very interesting culture, which includes the food they eat and the religion they’ve chosen to practice. The main foods involved in the Cayuga diet included corn, beans, and squash, also known as, the Three Sisters.
As man and woman grew from the corn and emerged from the buckskin they looked upon their new world with the eyes and mind that only a human could possess. Symbols are an important part of stories because they represent larger themes and teach lessons, and show themselves very prominently in the Native American stories “Navajo Origin Myth”, “When Grizzlies Walked Upright”, and “The World On Turtle’s Back”. For example in the “Navajo Origin Myth”, the gods created man and woman from corn, which symbolized life. Because of this, the people who believed this story rubbed themselves with cornmeal. The Iroquois Confederacy was a group of five Native American groups, (Mohawks, Oneidas, Onondagas, Cayuga, and the Senecas, and later the Tuscarora) that congealed together to form a political confederacy. Before the arrival of the Europeans in the late 15th century, the Native American groups fought against one another frequently. They were caught in a perpetual and never-ending cycle of wars of retribution. This confederacy was created to maintain peace between all five nations and to be aligned against foreign invasions. Becoming one of the most powerful Native American groups in the northeast, the confederacy relied on a council of sachems instead of a chiefdom system.

In 1700, the Tuscarora tribe joined to the confederacy making the Six Nations Iroquois. Each tribe was compound by two moieties, and each moiety was compound by one or more exogamous clans. The Iroquois Confederacy had a huge importance in America History because they were the immense native American political group that fought with French and England settlement of the America.
Nobody knows the origins of the world was based on two Native American Tribes that focuses the life of the Iroquois and Choctaw. In the Iroquois creation story, “The World on The Turtle’s Back” before the starting point of time, the universe did not have anything; no animals, no humans, nor land in sight. The woman who lives the Sky-World along with her husband removed the roots from the Great Tree which rests on her to fall into the ocean but was saved by animals below Sky-World. In the Choctaw creation story, “Grandmother Spider Steals the Fire” The Great Spirit brought people below the ground to see if there is anything in the dark, but there were no planets or stars.
In various cultures, traditional stories of a universal beginning relate to the beliefs and rituals that are prevalent within that society. Although these creation stories differ among cultures, all display similar characteristics which constitute archetypal settings of creation myths, such as a great tree, the landmass from a watery chaos, and the fall of man. In the Iroquois’ creation myth, “The World on the Turtle’s Back”, the display of archetypal settings parallels the creation depicted in the book of Genesis, but underlying each similarity are differing interpretations which allow for the stories to relate to its specific culture. In both “The World on the Turtle’s Back” and the Genesis creation story, a prominent characteristic is the great tree connecting heaven and earth.
