7 / D.P7: Explain how different procedures maintain health and safety in a selected health or social care setting Maintaining health and safety in health and social care is extremely important to ensure the health, safety and wellbeing of all their service users as well as other individuals service providers may come in contact with in the setting. There are several procedures that help to maintain this health and safety however they can all vary between settings for example, health and safety procedures will be slightly different and more focused on certain areas in hospitals and especially in paediatric ward compared to in drop-in centres where the needs and risk to service users are slightly different. Some of the procedures used in health and social care to maintain health and safety include; infection control and prevention, safe moving and handling of equipment and individuals, food preparation and storage, storage and administration of medication and storage and disposal of hazardous substances.
However, safety, health, and care have high chances to be compromised. In the hospital setting, patients with dementia get constant care, support, and help from staff in the
The Children’s Home of Reading-Acute Partial Hospitalization Program helped shape my perspective of professionalism thru constant reestablishments of what to expect when in an alternative hospitalization or residential treatment program. I was able to learn that the children who attend these types of facilities required much more attention. They also, require the redirection of skills that have never been taught to them before. At my internship site, an issue that is related to professionalism is that sometimes some staff members will have the intern complete miscellaneous task that has nothing to do with what they are primarily there for. Granted it makes the intern appreciate and learn that even the most miscellaneous task can be a good learning
When you're in a rush to see a doctor, the last thing you want to do is waste time searching for an urgent care center. SSM paper outline Spinal immobilization is one of the most common techniques used in prehospital situations. Its basic function is to prevent secondary injury of the spinal cord by prevention of flexion, extension and rotation of the vertebrae. This is important as the effects f spinal cord injury at any vertebral level can have devastating effects, including paraplegia and death. Because of this large risk, prehospital care providers always fall on the side of caution when a cervical injury is suspected in a patient. To determine if the patient is at risk of spinal injury, the mechanism of injury must be assessed.
(Joint Commissions, 2014).It is important for nurses to explain how to use the call light to the elderly patients, and also to ask for help before getting out of bed. Vulnerable patients should be placed close to the nursing station for close monitoring. It is very important to educate health care workers on the approaches used to prevent falls. The measures used to prevent falls in the elderly could include; carrying out a risk assessment during admission, placing colorful stickers outside their doors, stopping the use of psychotropic medications, teaching them the best way to use their assistive device, placing their call light and belonging within their reach, placing their beds in the lowest position with brakes /wheels locked at all times, removing throw rugs from their surroundings, making sure that they are wearing non-skid shoes/socks before ambulating and also giving them their prescribed Vitamin D supplement as well as encouraging them on the use of their corrective glasses or hearing aids. It is very important to educate health care workers on the approaches used to prevent
This reflection paper is intended to examine various ethical solutions to a case study proposed by authors Sen, Gordon, Adshead, and Irons, who are forensic psychiatrist experts. Given the case study and solutions, this papers intends to seek the solutions that will closely follow the Bioethics principles studied in class (Nonmaleficence, beneficence, autonomy and justice) as best possible. This particular case touches the subject of psychiatric disabilities, which would be one of the important focuses of my dissertation, and the main reason for electing such case.
In this scenario, the nurse’s justification of placing a belt restraint on Olive is parentalistic. According to Benjamin (1992) parentalism means that a person who is acting as if they have authority, is treating an adult as if they were a child. In order for this act of parentalism to be justified: 1) the subject must be ignorant of relevant information, or his/her capacity of rational reflection is impaired, 2) the subject is likely to be significantly harmed if there is no interference, or 3) it is reasonable to assume that the subject will later on ratify the decision to interfere by consenting to it (Benjamin, 1992). Because Olive meets only two out of three of this criterion, I believe that she should not have to wear the belt restraint.
What's more, it generally utilized to shield the patient from hurting him or others, the restraint never utilized as a punishment or threat individual Comfort and for shortage of staff. Our main goal is to keep all our patients safe. I agree with you, we use restraints on our patients to keep them safe and protect them from further injury. As much as possible, I would rather not use restraints in elderly. I have seen elderly patients get more agitated and caused more harm, especially when the patient is confused and unable to understand why restraints are being used. Ziglar (2015), a study was done in an acute care setting showing that the use of restraints in elderly can result in fall injuries, deconditioning, skin breakdown, incontinence, constipation, emotional distress, and even death.
Sedation management in this manner often leads to over sedation or under sedation (Dreyfus, Javouhey, Denis, Touzet, & Bordet, 2017). It is not un-common for a patient who was sedated on mechanical ventilation to be re-admitted to the the intensive care unit (ICU) after discharge due to poor sedation management. The patient, therefore, has an increased length of stay, complications of immobility, and an increase in hospital costs (Beck & Johnson, 2008; Verlaat et al., 2013). This leads to increase frustration from nursing staff, as they
In the Health care system it is important to provide best quality care in a safe environment and ensure dignity of care.
