Laurie Halse Anderson's Speak is a novel that makes a definite argument. In short, the novel argues that if you are a victim of a sexual assault, you will need to speak about it in order for yourself to grow and heal. As you probably know, there are lots of difficult reasons why victims of sexual assault might have a hard time speaking up about what's happened to them. Like Melinda Sordino, main character of Speak, they might be ashamed or afraid of what will happen if they tell. Speak is the story of Melinda Sordino, a high school freshman.

Anthony was one of the biggest leaders of the women’s rights movement because many men during the 19th century believed that women were not strong or smart enough to vote in government elections which is why women were not granted suffrage until August 18th, 1920. In Anthony’s speech that she gave in 1872, after being accused of voting in the presidential election, she argues that all of American citizens should have the right to vote and not just the white man. Anthony’s speech made several logical, ethical and emotional appeals which is what made her empowering and memorable speech set the tone for the women’s rights movement for decades to come.
In the novel Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson the main character, Melinda, often turns to nature to provide an inspiring story for her feelings of hopelessness to fall back on. Though it is not always blatantly stated, while Melinda comes to terms with the fact that she has been raped nature provides parallels to Melinda's life, symbolizing changing sentiments as they occur. This symbolism manifests in Melinda's interests, the seasons, and her art project. Melinda often mentions plant seeds throughout the story. Melinda's first mention of them is in Biology class when the class dissects apples.

Ironically, her school mascot changes frequently and typically at the same time as her mood. The first connection pertains the name of the old mascot, The Trojans: "Merryweather High—Home of the Trojans" did not send a strong abstinence message, so they have transformed us into the Blue Devils. Sexual violence happens every day across the world, “it is estimated that as high as 90% of rapes go unreported," (Repp). The majority of victims that are took advantage of are women. The perpetrators are usually men who lack empathy. Sexually violence both physically and mentally violates one of the basic human rights, “No one shall be subjected to torture or to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment” ("Universal Declaration"). By increasing communications, educating the youth, and reducing mental abuse human rights activists will deter sexual violence in the educational environment.
