America isn't all that great, when we first hear the word “America” we all think of something such as its food, or a better place to work and study, or maybe, a better place for your children. But what if I were to tell you that the American people aren't as friendly towards immigrants as we are? For example, my friend group is all culturally diverse but we act the same because we all assimilated without any problem. But what about the ones that did not assimilate, what if they didn't have enough time? Or if they just didn't put in the effort, how would they be treated differently from someone that has assimilated, towards someone that hasn't assimilated? Rodriguez's combined culture of other ethnicities is something that is beneficial to America, However, Rodriguez talks with a multitude of people being divided and categorized into separate ethnicity that they are based on. To begin, the author outlines that there was no one that cared to survey the other races, with clarity Rodriguez explains that assimilation happens naturally, that we don't even realize it. Thus, assimilation is happening right now. We know this because, it's fundamentally an everyday thing, we always automatically assimilate into friend groups or families. To better understand Amy Tan uses her mother in various examples to help us better understand how assimilation is important to be a part of American culture. With clarity, Amy Tan explains how she tried to get all of her friends to ask how well they can understand Amy's mother. “My friends tell me they understand fifty percent of what my mother says. Some say they understand about eighty percent, while others say they understand none of it as if she were speaking pure Chinese.” To be clear, this shows ethos as it uses evidence surveying her friends asking how much they can really understand her mother; “as if she was speaking pure Chinese”(Amy Tan 53-56). Hence, this shows ethos as it proves personal credentials. Another example, Amy Tan uses pathos to make us feel and better understand the story she is about to bring, this would make us feel emotional as if we were put in the same situation as she and her mother; with intensity Amy reveals that “My mother had gone to the hospital for an appointment to find out about a cat scan she had a month earlier, she said she had spoken very good English, her best English with no mistakes.
