One of the areas the student with higher-incidence disabilities have difficulty in is reading. In chapter five, it talks about that students with mild disabilities and if they have difficulties in reading, chances are they will have problems in all the areas. For reading, the general education teacher and special education teacher will work together to meet the goals for children with special needs. The IEP team works together to set goals and accommodate for the children with mild disabilities. Some of the assistive technology that teachers can use in the classroom for students with mild disabilities are, it talks about if a child has problems reading something in a book, because of visual problems, they would highlight certain parts of the text in different colors, to help the child see and read the words better. If a child has auditory problems an assistive technology device they would use would be, audio books, or electronic books, because they do not have to read anything they can just listen to the book. The assistive technology in this area can range from low to high tech. Some of the assistive technology devices children can use in the classroom are writing surface adaptations, auditory support through word processing. If a child is having difficulties with their handwriting you can simply change the writing area, by alleviating the paper by using a clipboard to form an angle, this can progress a child’s skills in writing. Also, having pencils grips on pencils so they it can help them support the use of a pencil.
