Advanced practice nurses (APN) have a vital role in the future of health care, especially since the enactment of the Affordable Health Care Act. With more citizens having health insurance coverage they will be seeking health care providers, and there are not enough physicians to care for them all. According to Letiziam (2014), advance practice nurses are licensed autonomous health care providers that have been trained to evaluate, diagnose, and treat patients and their conditions. Advanced practice nursing is an umbrella that covers four separate roles of nurses, this includes: the certified nurse midwife (CNM), certified registered nurse anesthetist (CRNA), certified nurse practitioner (CNP), and certified nurse specialist (CNS).
Who would you want answering your call in the middle of a frightening hospital night: A caring CNA--or a grumpy, pompous doctor? For many, a certified nursing assistant is very critical to their hospital-stay care and often seem to make the difference between life and death. Certified nursing assistant are all over the world. Being a nursing assistant is not a easy task.
Throughout the last three years, I have worked with the elderly in a nursing home called Aase Haugen as a certified nursing assistant. Since then, I have gained a tremendous amount of respect for registered nurses. Their leadership, passion, and commitment has inspired me to provide great health care to patients now and in my future career as a nurse. I am currently a freshman that has been accepted into the nursing program at Luther College. I think I would be a good candidate for this scholarship, because I put a tremendous amount of heart into my job and truly enjoying helping and assisting the elderly.
A project was made to elicit the opinions of members of AORN of Central Ohio regarding Ohio's BSN-in-10 initiative. Participants valued higher education, but were not informed about the need for more BSN-prepared nurses. The topic of my capstone project is to educate other members of the team such as respiratory therapist, pharmacist, and radiology technicians about the scope of practice and the role of the nurse practitioners in different settings including the emergency department. There are many advancement opportunities in the nursing profession specifically for nurses with Bachelor in Science of Nursing. The future of nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health. Trossman (2012) noted, “The goal is by 2020 that eighty percent of nurses in the workforce should have their Bachelor in Science of Nursing” (p. 6). The transition from an Associate Degree (AD) nurse to a Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing (BSN) is a rewarding time during a nurse’s career. There are many reasons why nurses return to college to get their BSN degree. Some return to meet a personal goal others return for professional advancement or are mandated by their employer to do so.
